Rider 04:08
In the small hours of morning Something whispers in my ear A thousand accusations No one wants to hear A laundry list of reasons To be dissatisfied You know you’ve got a rider When you carry this Inside Hanging in the graveyard With a tin cup telephone, Picking out a requiem From those beneath the stones I was a fool unguarded To open up to the unknown I forgot the warnings(I failed to head) And i took a rider home Wash yourself in cold salt water Burn those candles down Shed the skin she’s hiding in Shed the skin and scrape it clean Cuz that riders gonna ride you round and round Round and round Round and round Cuz that riders gonna ride you round and round Till you put that rider down I can see your rider. Picked up along the way Don’t know where he’s going Don’t know how long he’ll stay Got his own agenda Got Somewhere to be Got yourself a rider Now you won’t take me (don’t have room for) You’ve been dancing in the graveyard Tapping on the stones In a widows wedding dresses You bought with stolen bone You spun away the moment that you thought you were alone You forgot the blind spot And you took the rider home Wash yourself in cold salt water Burn those candles down Shed the skin he’s hiding in Shed the skin and scrape it clean Cuz that riders gonna ride you round and round Round and round Round and round Cuz that riders gonna ride you round and round Till you put that rider down

Armalite 04:59
Even as a child I knew I would take a bullet for you But In my life I’ve never seen Someone so lucky grow so mean I wonder what it was that turned you on A point and click solution and the problems gone You always liked your hands clean And to manifest the promise of a new machine. Now there’s an Armalite rifle underneath your bed Brass bright jacket and a heart of lead Back hand of god, I heard it said An Armalite rifle underneath your bed By all accounts your runs been good No one to tell you what you should You wear the boots around this town And no one dares to come around But in doesn’t look like you got much sleep and what you get is fast and cheep You dream of what they’d do to you It’s the same as you would too Now there’s an Armalite rifle underneath your bed Brass bright jacket and a heart of lead Back hand of god, I heard it said An Armalite rifle underneath your bed The Black rifle has its say Ends arguments a block away Hollow points and talking heads Blue and Gray, Blue and Red Blue and Gray, Blue and Red Misunderstood and overfed Too much hate to see what you might lose Not love enough to let you choose

Get Up 03:50
A little wood and a little wire Small fender amplifier Slight magic made by hand That was something I could understand I got nothing from the place I was School days just because Somebody wants you in an office chair Working wile they don’t see you there But I have tasted of the sacred wine Felt the pull when the stars align The only god is the one I know That’s the one yelling go cat go Get up get up get up get up get up Let it show Get up get up get up get up get up let it flow Don’t you think it’s time to love the things you can’t control If you don’t let it you’ll never know Little fisher price record player Transistorised and prized soothsayer Old vinyl from my parents time Holy relics of rhythm and rhyme I never had a lesson, taught my self Took a book from the library shelf It had everything I need I’d play ‘til my fingers bleed on a Borrowed guitar from a friend of mine He lost both arms to a powerline He taught me how to tune it with his feet That kind of grit just can’t be beat Get up get up get up get up get up Let it go Get up get up get up get up get up let it flow Don’t you think it’s time to love the things you can’t control If you don’t let it you’ll never know I’m here to testify I know I’m a lucky guy Just to have this chance To sing and play This music, it ain’t mine But it’s with me all the time And all I want to do is give it away So that’s what brings me here Tickling your ear I hope you’ll play with me Invest in Ecstasy You decide what your about you can wait your sentence out Or live life like a song by That everyone can sing along Get up get up get up get up get up Let it go Get up get up get up get up get up let it flow Don’t you think it’s time to love the things you can’t control If you don’t let it you’ll never know

When the pipes all freeze And you want to leave But the ice shuts down the road We got rolling blackouts rock’in Texas on account of all this cold Ain’t no salt, ain’t no plow. Barely more than corn insulating the house. The folks in the high-rise still got the bright lies, but those on the edges are struggling and dying Right here in Texas I where all of the best is in the year of 21 there were hard times behind us They don’t mind us Cus worse was yet to come Six days in, down to 6 degrees Cold in the bedroom, cold between the sheets Glass by my head froze When the cruel wind blows I can hear my name I swear it’s calling me. I had a friend who met his end On that bleak February His name was Gene Taylor The piano player one better I’ve yet to see I’d sat by the keys He tried to teach me. About slurs and slides and hard times on the road with JT. Now that lights gone out And I want to shout But all that texas has is blue silence for me.

about

I have something to share with you. I know it has been a while, but I think it was worth the wait. Four songs, the start of a series of releases, that I hope will get to the heart. I made this EP with Mark Addison, who recorded and produced it and co-wrote both Rider and Get Up. He challenged me to write from an intimate personal space. Songs, however personal they may be, still have to reach the listener. Poetry, rhythm, rhyme and tone are tools to transcend time and space and transport you to another place. A place where you might find a story that informs and enriches your own. I hope “the human” comes through in these songs..and “the ghosts” too.

Rider is the first, and also the title of this first EP. Rider is a ghost story. The ghosts are mine, but I’m betting they are yours too. Rider talks about being haunted by the ghosts and scars that we carry around inside, those hard to shake off unwanted guests that rattle around our heads and hearts.

Get Up is an anthem explaining why I am doing this and how I reached this point, obsessed with music and song. Why would you even bother trying to make this your living? For me, It’s something I simply had to choose. There wasn't ever a second or third option to consider. I was compelled to this life.

Armalite is the nightmare I wake to, the one my children are born into. The hunger for safety, the threat of violence, the fear of being unarmed and armed. It seems more than ever that violence is our American birthright, yet each of us has the seeds of creation and destruction. Why do we choose one over the other at any given moment? I don’t have the answers, but I do need to talk about it.

Rolling Blackout Blues helps me put one personal ghost to sleep. Gene Taylor was one of the best blues piano players I have ever known, and I have known many. During the power outages in February 2021 in Texas, Gene was found deceased at home in his bed where he had been trying to stay warm. The power at his place had been out for six days. I carried this anger and sadness over his death around with me until one night singing songs with Silas Lowe, we found a way to sing it out.
